[NEWS] TVXQ and Big Bang as Cultural Ambassadors

CONGRATS TVXQ and BB! :> I doubt if the five will come altogether to get the award, but I hope they will.

100119 TVXQ & Big Bang An Exception - Awarded "Cultural Ambassadors"

5-member groups TVXQ and Big Bang were each awarded as "Cultural Ambassadors". The International Culture Industry Exchange Foundation (KOFICE), under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, expressed that they decided to award TVXQ and Big Bang as "Cultural Ambassadors", to recognize their contributions in developing culture through popular music.

The main reasons for awarding them is because despite the slump in the music industry, they still managed to set records for releasing the most number of albums, as well as continuously carried out local and overseas activities.

An official from KOFICE expressed, "This is awarded annually to those who make the most contributions towards the development of culture. Before this, this award was usually given to those who work in the cultural industry, but this year there was an exception as it was awarded to idol groups."

He also stated, "As TVXQ and Big Bang's year-end schedules were very busy, the ceremony will be implemented in January."

[NEWS] Japan Melts at TVXQ's Musicality

Sorry for massive update today. Been lazy to post for the past two days ^____^ TADAIMA!

100115 Japan Melts At TVXQ's Musicality-Humanity

It was reported that Oricon compiled the album sales for each singer from over 20,000 stores and online sites and found that last year (2008.12.29~2009.12.27), TVXQ earned 6.8 billion Yen (83.3 billion Won). It was a swift leap from their sales in 2008. However, these numbers did not include what TVXQ earned from concerts and TV show appearances, so it can be estimated that TVXQ earned a total of 100 billion Won in Japan alone.

TVXQ also has the biggest fanclub in agency AVEX with around 180,000 Japanese people registered.

The majority of TVXQ's Japanese fandom is not made of middle aged women or grandmothers like the fandoms of Bae Yong Joon and other Hallyu stars. Instead, their fandom is comprised of a large fanbase with people in their 20s and 30s as well as those in their 40s and 50s. It can be seen that a stepping stone for TVXQ's ability to capture the hearts of the Japanese better than Hallyu stars was 'Kouhaku Uta Gassen', a performance hosted by NHK that boasts a viewing rate of over 40% annually. Last year, they participated in the event on New Year's Eve for the 2nd time and received the biggest applause out of all of the participants.

Kimiya Mariko, wife of Professor Kimiya Dadashi of Tokyo University who specializes in Japan-Korea relations, stated in a phone conversation with Hangyureh that, "I was first introduced to TVXQ and their music by my daughter three years ago. I saw them for the first time on Kouhaku Uta Gassen two years ago and fell for them." She believes that TVXQ's charm lies in the fact that, 'unlike Japanese idol groups who focus on the visual aspect and dance, TVXQ shows us their hard work to improve their music and their humanity.' She sees their good manners as a bonus. She also thinks of them as her children. "If my 9th grade daughter had liked any other group, I would have stopped her. But since she likes TVXQ, I say 'Just work hard as much as they do.'"

She has all of TVXQ's music software including CDs and concert DVDs released in both Korea and Japan. Not only that, she visited Korea last June to watch TVXQ perform. She said, "TVXQ was able to rank third in Album Sales abroad because of their persistence and hard work, it proves that their musicality and humanity are digging their way into the hearts of the Japanese population," as though the feat was her own personal victory.

The fact that TVXQ's activities not only spread their music, but also shaped them as the spreaders of the Hallyu Wave, and as ambassadors of Korea, cannot be ignored. Kimiya said, "I learned about Korean singers through TVXQ and now I enjoy songs by Shin Seung Hoon, Big Bang, and Girls' Generation as well." She also said, "I know a lot of people who started studying Korean because they liked TVXQ." She added, "TVXQ is not only Korea's treasure, but Asia's treasure as well."

However, Korean and Japanese fans are unable to hide their sadness as the dispute between three members of TVXQ and SM Entertainment over their exclusive contract continues. Kimiya said, "When I saw TVXQ in Kouhaku Uta Gassen, they looked as though they had no energy in them; it was completely different from what they were usually like." Last November, Kimiya sent an e-mail to reporters criticizing the actions of the agency and asking for the Korean media to focus more on the issue.

"Although this problem is quite important for society as it deals with old work ethics of the entertainment business and the basic worker's rights, I feel as though many see it only as fuss kicked up by an idol group or a problem only dealing with fans and the younger generation.

The agency is not taking on the responsibility it needs to take on with so many Asia fans. We are being neglected."

[NEWS] Avex Contract Expires this June

100103 TVXQ's Japanese Contract Expires In June... What Comes Next?

Amidst the chaos that has erupted amongst fans due to a Japanese newspaper's claim that TVXQ is on the brink of officially disbanding, TVXQ's Japanese agency AVEX has released its official statement.

On the 3rd, Nikkan Sports reported that "TVXQ's plans of performing as five have not changed," quoting TVXQ's Japanese agency AVEX.

However, it has been said that TVXQ's contract with their Japanese agency AVEX expires this coming June. If it is decided to not extend the contract, TVXQ's future in Japan looks uncertain.

At the moment, Choikang Changmin and U-Know Yunho who have decided to stay in SM and YoungWoong Jaejoong, Mikcy Yoochun and Xiah Junsu who have left SM are all engrossed in their own individual activities.

The five of them did appear at the end of the year awards in Japan such as NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen, the fact that the three members' request against SM Entertainment was partially accepted by the Courts and the fact that this dispute has led to emotional fights and information leaks between the two sides has led to the conclusion that it is impossible to further any domestic activities at this point.

The problem is whether the three members' side and SM's side will extend their contract with AVEX in June. It can said that neither side can ignore this problem as TVXQ's currently soaring popularity in Japan has reaped in great economic profit.

Some are seeing this issue in a positive light that TVXQ's activities in Japan may be keeping an option open to a agreeable compromise to the TVXQ dispute in the long run.

[NEWS] Japanese Fans' Ad in Korean Newspaper

100104 Japanese Fans’ Published Ad at Korean Newspaper to Support TVXQ!

TVXQ Korea fansite DNBN and TVXQ Japan fans unite to publish an ad at local newspaper which the content is ‘We will love and support TVXQ forever”, the ad is published today on the 4th.

From DNBN, “TVXQ is now having a difficult time, and all the fans together with the Japanese fans mean to empower them to go through this time, thus the ad was created.” they said. “The Japanese fans who also always think about TVXQ want to encourage them, and to convey the love they have to the members.

The Japanese fans shout their feeling through the ad as this is:

When publishing an ad this time, we thought about it a lot. Though we did think about SM…..Most of all, we wanted to tell Tohoshinki members that we dearly love them. We received a lot of happiness from them. They made huge effort in a different country named Japan where they could not understand the language. Therefore, we wanted to tell them that we will continue to support them for a long time. And, we felt that it was difficult to criticize SM, when thinking the fact that their belonging office does also exist here in Japan. We prepared this advertising to be published from the time when we did not understand anything (how to pay and such to hold an ad in Korean newspaper). We searched for the advertising agency in Japan, and it introduced a daily report company in Korea. As we had imagined, it was difficult to figure out information about South Korean News Paper Ad from Japan. Please understand. We were very glad to receive assistance/support from DNBN and a lot of Cassiopeia’s this time. Thank you so much. We want to send much appreciation and thankfulness to you. From the fans of Japan that agreed this advertisement and Five Balloons. We love you.

[NEWS] Disbandment: Groundless Rumors

100101 TVXQ Officially Disbands?... SM States "Baseless Rumors"

Japanese media reported that TVXQ officially disbanded and shocked many fans.

On the 1st, Japan's Sports Nippon stated that, "Korea's TVXQ has disbanded at the peak of their popularity." According to the report, the relationship between the agency and the members involved in the dispute had deteriorated so much that it could not be fixed and that representatives in both Korea and Japan were going through the steps for an official disbandment.

TVXQ is garnering great popularity in Japan so this news was posted as main entertainment news on Yahoo Japan. TVXQ attended 'the 60th Kouhaku Uta Gassen' on the 31st in Japan.

According to Sports Nippon, TVXQ stood on stage together, but there was great tension between the three members who were in the dispute and the two who weren't. The members of TVXQ all used the same dressing room but they returned to Korea in separate planes.

They also stated that the single being released on the 27th will be the last single, and there will be a best album released on the 17th next month.

Regarding this, agency SM Entertainment said, "The content of the article is just a baseless rumor," and "They are not officially disbanding." One representative stated, "There are no future plans set into stone."

[NEWS] Top 10 Annual Earnings 2009

091231 tvN ENEWS 'Blackbox', Celebrities' Annual Earnings Ranking Revealed "

TVXQ, who is currently in a dispute with their agency, caught the attention of many by having the highest annual earnings this year dispite the unfavorable conditions they are currently in.

tvN ENEWS' 'blackbox' corner that was aired on the 20th ranked the celebrities with the top ten annual earnings this year.

The celebrity with the highest earnings was TVXQ, followed by Rain, Big Bang, Super Junior, Kim Hyun Joon, Go Hyun Jung, Girls' Generation, Lee Byung Hun, Yoo Jae Seok and Kang Ho Dong.

It was found that TVXQ earned at least 126.4 billion Won (equivalent to approximately 109 million USD) this year when their 90 billion Won earnings from Japanese album sales are taken into account.

However, this news is overshadowed by the fact that TVXQ is currently fighting a legal dispute with their agency SM Entertainment over an 'unfair contract' and have even been driven to the brink of a disbandment.

Newsway announcer/reporter Jung Soo Ryang stated, "TVXQ was able to reap such earning regardless of the fact that they are in such unfavorable conditions with the legal dispute," and "If their had been no legal dispute, they would have earned much more than this amount."

She also added, "If TVXQ, who has evolved from just a domestic star to a Hallyu star of Asia, cannot overcome these unfortunate conditions and disband, not only will this be a huge loss to our country's entertainment industry, it will also be a loss at a nationwide scale," and "I hope to see TVXQ come to a reasonable agreement with their agency and return to the stage in good spirits."

ENEWS' 'Blackbox' airs every Wednesday and brings experts of many fields to the panel to discuss controversial events of the entertainment industry.

[INFO] FOCUS: 10 Awards Top 10 News of 2009

091230 FOCUS: 10 Awards - Top 10 News of 2009

Top 10 News of 2009

Two former presidents and a king passed away. One wrong remark during an entertainment show took the entire country by storm. Such unbelievably enormous incidents were played out in unbelievable directions during 2009. Thus, the top ten news of 2009 selected by <10 Asia> may seem like the ten most incredulous news of the year. But one could say that what these ten news stories have in common is that they carry the flow of Korea’s pop culture. Can you really believe that all these things happened within a span of one year?

News 1. Actress Jang Ja-yeon commits suicide
On March 7, one little known actress wrote in her suicide note, “I am a weak, powerless actress. I want to be free from this pain” and killed herself. It was actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was appearing in KBS TV series “Boys Over Flowers” at the time. The suicide note, which was 12 pages long on A4-sized paper, explained that she had been physically abused by her agency, forced to drink and provide sexual services. It also listed names of high-ranking executives in the industry, including a head of media company, television drama director and owners of business companies. People started calling the note “The Jang Ja-yeon List”. The incident brought to surface how badly aspiring actresses and female celebrities in general have been violated and the ugly power of the media. But due to slow, passive investigation by the Korean authorities, the truth never came to light. Of all people who were under investigation, only two people involved in the incident -- former head of Jang’s agency and former manager who exposed Jang’s suicide notes -- were indicted and the suspects whose names were listed in the documents were all cleared of charges and let go. Was the death of Jang Ja-yeon a suicide or a homicide?

News 2. Korean media laws revised
In March, the two political parties of Korea’s National Assembly agreed that they would put the issue of media law revision to vote in June. And the consequent, crazy uproar that took place at the National Assembly in July was almost half-expected. Amidst all the physical fighting between the two opposing party members, the material bribery and proxy votes, the Grand National Party officials passed the bill allowing for media law revision. With the new media law, businesses and daily newspaper publications can own up to 10 percent of the shares of a public network and companies can jump into the new media businesses. Of course, nobody knows for sure what kind of consequences such a decision will bring. What we do know, however, is that there is nothing reasonable about what had happened during the revision process; a large number of proxy votes got the new bill passed, a government official who had protested against the new bill led a labor strike among media employees, the ruling of Korea’s Constitutional Court which said the passing of the new bill stood viable even if it admitted people’s voting rights had been violated during the process.

News 3. Michael Jackson dies
2009 could be called “the year of loss” since we lost so many people who have influenced our lives. And the death of Michael Jackson was a big loss to everyone around the world. He was the one and only “King of Pop” who had conquered the world, but he died a lonely death amidst all the rumors. Now all we can do is show Michael Jackson’s performances to our children because we might never see such an entertainer ever again. The King may be dead but pop music lasts forever.

News 4. Jae-beom leaves idol group 2PM
One cannot say that Park Jae-beom was right in writing “I hate Korea” on his blog during his teen years. One may not approve of what he did and may even criticize him for it. But was it so wrong that he had to leave Korea amidst requests for suicide petitions? In just four days after the news of what he had written broke out, Jae-beom quit his group 2PM. Everything that had happened was a violent storm cooked up by a minimal number of extreme netizens and the media which was busy upping the number of visitors. There are people in this country who want to deport a boy over what he had written as a teenager. Really, how could they mess with someone’s life so carelessly?

News 5. Korean stars make Hollywood debut
A long time ago, Sonokong and his monks headed west in search of India for more advanced Buddhism. And in the age of globalization, Korean stars also headed west to Hollywood, which is the world capital of the entertainment business. 2009 was a year when the long journey to Hollywood produced some tangible achievements. Rain -- who was under pressure to become a global star after making TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” list in 2006 -- proved himself by playing the title role in action movie “Ninja Assassin”. And Lee Byung-hun, who seemed somewhat stuck in the Hallyu star label, also made himself known around the world by playing Storm Shadow, the most impressive villain in “G. I. Joe”. People criticized the Wonder Girls’ of neglecting the Korean music market when they made their U.S. debut, but they made quite an achievement -- they entered the Billboard Hot100 chart within a year of their debut.

[INFO] 2009 Pop Culture Leading Power 30

091229 DBSK Ranks 27th on 2009 Pop Culture Leading Power 30

DBSK was in 27th of 2009 pop culture leading power 30. (No activity in Korea in 2009 but still on TOP XD)

Major criteria for the selection includes ▶Cultural and social influence ▶Power to move the public ▶Economic importance and influence in the business of public culture and so on. Even though the activity made throughout this year had a great influence in the selection, we also carefully considered symbolic power, representation, popularity and so on.

The survey was conducted on 64 businessmen, who are working in the related fields of public culture, for a week starting the 9th of December. Method of the survey was for the subject to select 5 comprehensive ‘power-leaders’ that compositely cover all broadcasting, music businesses, singers etc., and to select 2 people representing each category. We applied different weights for their ranks, the ‘comprehensive’ #1 to #5 were each given 5 to 1 points, and each category’s #1 and #2 were recorded as 2 and 1 points each. These points were summed up, and hence the best public culture leaders of 2009 were selected.

[NEWS] Chinese Fans vs SM Entertainment

091229 TVXQ's Chinese Fanclub Takes Legal Action Against SM Ent.

It has been confirmed that Chinese fans are planning to take legal action against SM Entertainment and the Chinese sponsoring company for the cancellation of the Shenzhen 'TVXQ Thrid Asia Tour-MIROTIC' concert that was to be held on November 21st.

A representative of Chinese TVXQ fansite Baidu BAR said in an e-mail interview that, "We were severely hurt by this event," and "We could have understood if the concert had been canceled for reasons beyond anyone's control, but we cannot sit idly by and let these deceptive tricks go," and stated that they are receiving legal counsel for this case.

The representative highlighted the forged note of confirmation from the members to state that they would participate in the concert and said, "This case includes fraud. This is the thing that we find hardest to accept," and "We are beginning to take legal action against SM Entertainment and the Chinese sponsor company by asking for Perpetuation of Evidence and other actions."
